Victory's Corner - May 2006
Peace and metal to all of you out there again. This time we get a guest writing from my good friend Irre.
Today I am used to people looking strangely at me when I tell them
that I listen to metal. It is almost the same feeling over those
situations when I tell them that I believe in Jesus Christ.
I have been listening to christian metal since 2004, still I am
totally not an expert. But I am telling you; one of the things that
fascinates me about christian metal, is the lyrics of the songs. It is
not in all lyrics about happiness, joy and mercy. But it is not in all
lyrics about judgement day, bad valuations or about the guy
downstairs. A little bit of everything. As our lives are.
Therefore, I believe that lyrics in every christian song is a personal
testimony for the listeners.
But most important; christian lyrics is one of the many expressions
there is, to serve the Lord.
A couple of times in high school, I struggled with difficult
situations which spiritually made me feel very terrible. I spoke with
a preacher at a new year´s camp, asking him what I should do when I am
in those kind of situations. He said to me that first of all I should
thank God. Second that I should just sing and praise the Lord, or just
listen to worship on a CD
Since that conversation, I have been doing this in situations when I
have been feeeling sad, scared or depressed.
Now then, let me ask you something. Which kind of songs do you think I
prefer to hear or sing when I am sad? I am not saying only worship as
in Hillsong United.
This is what christian metal has been helping me so much during these
years. Just listening to the lyrics, taking time with God in moments
when I have been feeling low... it has always been something that
cheers me up.
King David, who wrote the Psalms, is an interesting person in the Holy
Bible. He had a close relationship with God, although he sometimes
doubted and felt that God was not close to him:
My soul also is greatly troubled; But You o Lord, who long? Return, o
Lord, deliver me. O, save me for Your mercies sake
(PSALMS 6:3-4),
How long, o Lord? Will You forget me forever? How long will you hide
Your face from me? How long shall I take counsel in my soul, having
sorrow in my heart daily? How long will my enemy be exalted over me?
Consider and hear me, O Lord my God; Enlighten my eyes, Lest I sleep
the sleep of death
(PSALMS 13:1-3)
Still he wrote these psalms, as an expression of what he felt about God:
I will praise the Lord, accoring to His righteousness, And will sing
praise to the name of the Lord Most High (PSALMS 7:18),
Give unto the Lord,O you mighty ones, Give unto the Lord glory and
strenght. Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; Worship the
Lord in the beauty of holiness
(PSALMS 29:1-2)
God has given us gifts, which we are suppoased to use to please him.
Not everybody is suppoased to be preachers, and not everybody is
supposed to be worship leaders in the churches.
How would the world look like then?
If you feel that you want to express your faith with words, then write.
If you feel that you want to express your faith with music, then make a song.
You know what you have got. God knows you very good and he knows what
you have in your heart.
He is longing for hearing you express your faith to Him.
But be dooers of the world, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves
(JAMES 1:22)
