Tinnitus - interview May 2000

Here is an interview with one of my favourite bands, Tinnitus.

Victory:Please tell me shortly about yourselves and the band's history.
Tinnitus:This is how it all began:once upon a time...(enough of that). Four years ago Janne Löf (guitarist) and Joachim Frantz (drummer) teamed up as a band, both of them had an iron will to praise the Lord with the gifts that they had been given. Progressive death-metal was the idea from the beginning and they started to work on own material immediatly. Fredrik Kass' dream came true when Tinnitus asked him to do the vocal parts (Fredrik was the first choice). This young and talented man was a friend of both Janne and Joachim, he even had a very cheap humor just like the others so they worked perfectly together. Klaus Österholm appeard later but soon chose another career, the bottomline-monster Stefan Nygård took his place, no hard feelings here, we still love you Klaus!

Victory: As far as I know, Tinnitus is not a widley known band (what a shame), how should you describe your music to those who has never heard you before?
Tinnitus: Widley known...well that depends on how you see it. In our hometown we have not made any big audience yet but the response has been great on several places around the world (USA, Russia, Sweden, Dennmark, Chile, etc.).
Those of you who haven't heard us; death-metal with progressive influences.

Victory:Which are your main goals with the band Tinnitus?
Tinnitus:The purpose of this band is to tell people about Jesus!

Victory:You have released two demos, what do you think about them? Are you satisfied with them or is there anything you think you've got to improve?
Tinnitus:No! The tracks are absolutely perfect! (Laughs). Seriously we would like to do the overall sound in another way; lift up the kicks higher and cleaner, the whole sound could use a little more of the top frequencies and what Janne would do with those guitarsounds...that would last forever. We financed all our recordings by ourselves and since none of us ever have won the lottery, the recordtime ws unfortunately very limited. Some rearrangements could be done on the production side but after all...no serious artist is ever satisfied with his work, there's always something to improve.

Victory:From where do you get your inspiration to write music?

Tinnitus:Well, the long hot saunanights that we spend together usually bring some good ideas and great music, of course is another source is the Holy Spirit.

Victory:I love your first demo (and the second as well...) what kind of reaction did you get from the media?

Tinnitus:99% of the reviews have been really positve (many of them full points), those who didn't like us had nothing to complain about except the message.

Victory:Any new recordings planned? Perhaps a full-length album?

Tinnitus:We're continusly working on new material but we already have enough material to fill a full-length album. The only thing missing is the financer so we'll just keep on looking for that contract.

Victory:Finally, name your five best CD's
Tinnitus:

1.Mortification - Triumph of mercy
2.Dream Theater - Metropolis pt.2:Scenes from a memory
3.Tourniquet - Microscopic view of a telescopic realm
4.Rush - Counterparts
5.Extol - Burial

Victory:Thank you very much and good luck with the band, I really hope you'll recieve a contract soon!
/Victory

Tinnitus:Thanx and bye!
