Troglodyte Dawn - S/t
Troglodyte Dawn is a doom metal band run by Randy Mitchels. This first release was made all by himself and took him seven years to complete. At the moment he is looking for other bandmembers.
After a short intro the slow doom rocker Fallen World starts. It's a vert nice tune, Randy's voice sounds haunting and suits the song very well. In the middle the song turns into a full rocker to later return to the slow doomy mood. One thing that sadly hits the listener during this fast part is the poor production. The drums, bass and vocals sound alright but the guitar sound is very thin and the distortion not very good during the heavier parts. Redeemed is a happier song spiced up with crowd cheers. Longing is a beautiful instrumental which is followed by the Black Sabbath cover Forever After. Randy has rewritten the lyrics and pulls off the song very well and I must say it's one of the highlights on the album although I admit to be partial towards Deliverance's version of the song. Randy really starts to show off his musical talents here.
Flower is a worship song with a similar feel as Delirious' King of Fools. The next highlight on the album is the heavy rocker Lust. The poor guitar sound once again bothers a bit but the song is nonetheless awesome and Randy provides some cool 70's style solos and excellent riffing. The album finally fades out with the slow doomer Look on the Cross and haunting outro Dawn. The lyrics on the album as mentioned before are very worship-like and Randy takes examples from his own life and sings about the discoveries he has made in life which makes the lyrics very genuine and easy to relate to.
This was quite an difficult album to review as the talent and great songwriting definately is there but the weak production makes it more like doom rock than doom metal. If you like doom with lot's of 70's inspired sounds and don't mind a weak production I can definately recommend this album to you. I will eagerly await what Troglodyte Dawn will bring us in the future and hope that at least some of these songs will be re-recorded with a sound that makes them better justice sometimes.

TROGLODYTE DAWN draws its influences from several diverse and unlikely places. The sound and somber mood of BLACK SABBATH's doom-metal stylings are ever present, as are frequent seasonings of world and ambient music purveyors such as OUTBACK, BRIAN ENO and TANGERINE DREAM. Elements of worship music such as KEMPER CRABB's work can also be heard, since the artist?s ultimate purpose is to reveal God to mankind by any means necessary and to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Tying up the whole package is the lyrical content, which contains a message that is directly inspired by the Holy Spirit, Holy Scripture and the journey of this life coupled with the hope of the next.
