Jacobs Dream - Drama of the Ages
After a couple of agonizing years for all the Jacob’s Dream fans, they finally return with another piece of marvellous metal. It has been about four years since their highly praised “Theater of war” was relased, and ever since the fans have been waiting for new stuff to enjoy. But you could sense fear among the fans when news told that their singer had left the band and been replaced by a new singer Chaz Bond, who was most known for singing in the more extreme metal band Biogenesis.
But all the fears are swept away when you start listening to the new album “Drama of the Ages”. Chaz voice is awesome, still carrying the melody but also adding a lot of emotion into every song. One must also praise the heavy production, which is a lot better since the last album.
What I really like with “Drama of the Ages” is that they seem to have laid down massive works to create interesting and intelligent songs. Every song is different from the other and it makes the album quite unique, you can feel that they really bring something fresh into the power metal scene.
This is one of the few albums, where I love every single song (cannot remembered when that happened last time). It starts of with the catchy, but with a strange keyboard intro, “Drama of the ages” and you can hear from the start that what we got here is pure quality! Chaz majestic voice combined with soaring guitars create a splendid atmosphere which is all over this album! The second song is the catchy and über-melodic “Keeper of the crown”, which is one of the highlights here. “Spinning leaf” got a dark and a bit goth feel to it and “Stand of fall” is a Queensrÿche inspired tune. “Tempest” is another favourite of mine, where I’ve fallen in love with the absolutely great chorus. The ending has an early Saviour Machine feel to it as well. “Third way” is a crunchy heavy metal tune and “Forever winter” has a progressive feel to it, with many instrumental parts. “Drowning man” is quite dark but also very emotional. “Deceiver of the nations” is a up-tempo tune with some more majestic singing from Mr. Chaz and a great chorus. “Cutting words” is probably the best track on the CD. It has about everything you wish for, emotion, heaviness and a great chorus. The melodic “Victory” follows and while it’s quite dark it has a triumphant feel to it. When “At the gates” you first think that Blind Guardian’s “Nightfall in middle-earth” somehow has jumped into the player and started, since it sounds a lot like the battle scenario that particular starts with. But after a minute the song kicks off and we get a quality ending to the album, a half-epic tune which is a bit paced up with many melodies. A great way to end an album…we think until the hidden song starts, which is a metal version of a classical tune. And even that is a very well performed!
All in all, this is one of the best albums I’ve heard in a long, long time. It’ll take something massive to surpass this one for the best album of the year award!
