Glass Hammer - The Inconsolable secret
Another year and another release from the progressive giants, Glass Hammer. Since the early 90’s, they have constantly been releasing albums, and with every album they seem to grow more and more popular. With their trademark Hammond filled progressive rock; they have proved that it’s actually possible to create a unique sound, which doesn’t fit into any of the major prog-styles we found.
I loved their latest album, “Shadowlands”, and was hoping for something similar, quality talking. Now they give us a double album, filled with music to the max! The first disc only contains two songs, where one is over 15 minutes and the other is nearing the 25 minute mark. These two explores the project area very well, where the first one, the Gentle Giant influenced “The maker of Crowns”, is pretty much a masterpiece, which could be one of their best songs ever. The other one is also great, but tend to have some boring moments, and I at times I don’t like the vocal harmonies. But it grows with every listen.
The second disc, called “The lady”, gives us eleven more tracks to enjoy. The music here, reminds me a lot the music we found at their “Lex Rex” album. I.e. a lot of melodies and vocal arrangements. I also love how they combine Walter Moore’s vocals with Susie Bogdanowicz’, the result is at times stunning and moves you instantly into progressive heaven.
One thing disturbs me though, and that is the booklet…or the fact that there is none present! All of the lyrics is included on one if the discs and that is one terrible solution. I believe many will agree with me, when I claim that we want to have a real booklet, so we can read the lyrics while we listen to the album. So, next time, include them please!
The artwork must also be mentioned, it’s made by the legendary Roger Dean (www.rogerdean.com) and it’s awesome!
Thank you Steve Babb and Fred Schendel for another splendid effort!
