VIP - Unen Valta

I was not familiar with the previous work of the Finnish band VIP, but Unen Valta is a very pleasant surprise. It is a quite impressive piece of work. I don’t know if it is because of the Finnish humbleness, or the lack of skills in the English language, or that the Finnish metal music market is so good that no international success is any longer needed, but this band, as many other good Finnish metal bands, sings entirely in Finnish. But hey, who needs English anyways?

The music is for most parts pretty straight forward quality melodic metal, but it also has a lot of different influences that are shown. As the quite unique and dreary Finnish rock-metal sound that has dominated the Finnish charts as long as I can remember. Then there are also some metalcore influences, or is it the other way around? It’s just a feeling you get with some drumbeats and some riffs. You can even find some shrieking vocals that closest resembles black metal vocals, without the blackmetal.

To compare the sound of Unen Valta with sounds of other bands one would almost have to turn the looks to Finland alone as the singing in Finnish gives the music a kind of strong Finnish sound. Bands such as Kilpi, Teräsbetoni, Apulanta, Don Huonot and CMX springs to mind, and most of you probably have no idea what these bands sound like. But the music is some kind of modern melodic metal with some progressive elements and some more aggressive tunes to it.

The production is top notch and the disc can easily be place out there in the shelves with all the other high-quality releases. The musicians are very skilled and they do a great job, the drumming is great and varied, and the guitar work is creative and impressive. A lot of acoustic guitar is used to create an almost magical atmosphere. The voice of Jussi Pajunpää works really well in finnish.

The lyrics are almost more than straight forward with their Christian content, dealing with all from depression, to hurt, to hope, to giving up, to frustration, to spiritual battle, all real melodic metal bands must have songs about battle, and quoting the bible with “if the Lord is for us, then who can be against us” makes it complete.

This is definitely a release to get acquainted with. Highly recommended! Especially if you’re into the Finnish sound.
