Veni Domine - Material sanctuary
This is the second release from the progressive doom giants of Sweden, Veni Domine.
A long time ago I listened to their debut Fall Babylon Fall, and I did not get hooked. This time I was going to see them live so I borrowed Material Sanctuary to try to get into this band and their music.
This time it went a bit better than the last time, but even though the music was pure excellence it took me forever to start liking the vocal style of Fredrik Ohlsson. And the music, although excellent, just reminded me a bit too much of a doomed and progged up version of the Iron Maiden sound, and I haven’t been into the Iron Maiden sound since I was 14.
But despite all my personal tastes and prejudice, I got to a point where I could start enjoying Veni Domine and their rather unique sound. And Material Sanctuary has really started growing on me, and that is much thanks to it being a great album.
Material Sanctuary is filled with great songs, such as Ritual Of A Sinner, Behold The Signs, Beyond The Doom and The Meeting. They have added very nice background vocals, some wonderful weirdness and beautiful acoustic parts, all which adds up to a stew that I can enjoy even though this is the one style of doom metal I like the least.
So from loving all other kinds of doom and despising this kind of doom, I suddenly have one band that plays this kind of doom that I can enjoy, making the circle of doom complete for my part.
