Veni Domine - Tongues

After the agonizing period between 1998 and 2004 when nothing really happened in the Veni Domine camp they suddenly started to spit out albums like an angry lama. Tongues, which is the name of the new one from the masters of Experimental Doom Metal, is actually their third in as many years they've released and once again they produce an album which is filled with splendid music and powerful lyrics. And as usual they're expanding their musical area even wider.

So, all the fans hoping for a new Fall Babylon Fall must wait a bit longer (even though I have a tingling feeling that they'll never get one!) since what we have here is not much like it. We get some very varied songs filled with experimental sounds and at the same time many catchy hooks, which sneaks in to your mind in search for a permanent residence.

Great songs are the catchy and melodic "The Bell Of A Thousand Years", the slow and emotional "Bless my Pain" and the epic "Tree of Life". But honestly there is not many bad tunes here, apart from the very strange experience one gets in the mysterious song "Tongues", which is a 16-minute journey into no man's land. It starts slow and when you just believe a song can get slower it does! At the end you can literally fall asleep between the periods something happens. So in my book the CD contains 9 songs + 16 minutes of Swedish Doom humor.

But once again the boys deliver and I am quite sure that many will hail this album as one of the finest releases we'll get this year.

Band information
Symphonic progressive doom metal at its very best. Veni Domine has over the years been pretty much the standard when talking about symphonic doom metal. Entered the scene majestically with their highly acclaimed "Fall Babylon Fall" and has ever since been producing high quality metal. Fredrik's voice reminds a lot of early Geoff Tate and music vice they are often described as similar to them, even if Veni Domine has a far more symphonic and epic sound.
