Seems as it's a good year for christian metal; many bands have released astonished albums and what is
even better many new bands have popped up like mushrooms in the moss! Northern flame is the
brainchild of Emil Stenroos and Niclas Buss, the latter being one heck of a guitarist,
delivering ultra melodic guitarriffs with an artistic touch to it.
The best way to describe their music would be melodic heavy metal, but the guys have chosen not to stay
in one genre (to harden things for us reviewers) and they take influences from here and there. Therefor I decide to
give you a track by track review of their first demo.
1. Twilight comes - So the journey begins and guess by what, yes, melodic metal! It starts quite fast
to slow down when the singer starts to use his pipes. The songer is by the way quite good but you clearly hear that
he still has something to learn. Also (by some unknown reasons) some growls are added in the chorus.
Overall this is good starter with some awesome shreddings in to it.
2. Starlit sky - Is it Kai hansen's lost brother playing the guitar?! No, but by hearing the intro to
starlit sky you could believe that! This perhaps the most catchy song on their demo (at least I found my self
singing it in the shower) and it also is the most melodic.(so is that ridiculus melodic solo)
3. Lost in the shadows - This is one of two ballades on the demo. It's quite a slowly one with
some heavy riffs in the chorus. This is, in my humble opinion, the second best song on their demo.
4.At the shores of pitkäjärvi - Heh, I always laugh when hearing this song's chorus
"[many exciting words sung]...at the shores of pitkäjärvi" What the heck is shores of pitkäjärvi?!
I tried to ask the guys about it but they were silent as rocks. Well enough mumbling about this and over to the
song. This is The song, epic progressive metal. In my opinion one of the best songs of 2003. If the
production would be better it would easily beat most of the songs out there. A catchy chorus (driven by some
cathcy guitar riffs) and overall some excellent musical performance by the guys. I am stunned and you'll be
that too when you listen to this.
5. The wanderer The only song I usually skip. This is the ballad with a medieval(due to some
wisely chosen keyboard addings) touch to it. This reminds me a bit of Blind Guardian, when they're doing
ballades, not top quality but still you can listen to it without falling asleep.
But Please provide us with fast melodic epic metal instead!!
If you're not pushed away by a mediocre production and a drummachine, I really recommend
that you check these guys (and their shreddings) out!
Overall a pleasant listening experience and if the singer continues to grow and mature I am honestly very
surprised if this band is still unsigned after a year.
