The rain - Tie 316

After the success of the bands debut album Kiitos ja Anteeksi it was with interest I waited how the new album would measure up. At my first listen I thought it sounded just like the first album but I quickly started to notice the differences. Tie 316 is the heaviest thing the band has put out so far and that gets a lot of points in my book. The sound world has been polished nearly to perfection. The drums are very powerful and there are a lot of double bass and intense drumming present. The only improvement would be some more agressive drumming. Guitarist Jussi has started to play some leads and while they are not lightning fast Yngwie Malmsteen leads they sure sound good and add a lot to the songs. The use of keyboard arrangements is once again superb. All instruments are nicely blended and leave enough room for each other for all of them to stand out.

The vocals of the Haveri brothers sound as good as ever. One thing that has been left out is the female backing vocalists. At first you might miss them a little but the new backing vocalists are really at least as good and perhaps fit the heavy songs a little better. The lyrics are somewhat more difficult to understand than the straight forward ones on Kiitos ja Anteeksi but the band has provided explanations about all of them on their website. The message is still spiritually uplifting and thought provoking as you've learned to expect from The Rain.

This album is a nice whole with not a single bad song. It outdoes the great debut album in almost all areas. As a bonus track at the end you find the 2001 single Kolmas Aamu that was made as a sequel to the excellent song Sotilas. Tie 316 is a solid listening experience and fans of melodic metal won't be disapointed but I can also see fans of a lot of other genrés enjoy it. Surpassing this great album will sure be a challenge for the band. While we wait for that to happen I can highly recommend this album!
